Seven steps to battling burnout

instagram-Fiera

Replace burnout with brilliance by following our guide below…

Blue Monday. How many times did you hear or read that phrase this week? My money is on five. At the very least. Creative burnout is difficult to fight at the best of times, even more so when it’s raining. And cold. And you’re ill. For a less depressing January, whack out a delicious soup and read our 7 steps for fighting creative burnout below.

Break it down

Who remembers BBC Bitesize? Or the phrase ‘bitten off more than you can chew’? This is all in the psychology. Write your tasks down and break things into smaller, more manageable chunks. Viewing everything as one big mission is usually how people do things, but it also makes everything seem a bit more daunting.

Get real

Are you being a bit unrealistic? Stop and think if what you’re doing is actually, genuinely possible. Don’t lead yourself on a wild goose chase – if it can’t be done, you’re setting yourself up for failure. Edison might say failure is important, but not when your client has a deadline to hit!

Look after yourself

If you’re tired, sleep. If you’re hungry, eat. Gone are the days of suffering artist (although rent levels would beg to differ). You can’t be at your best unless you’re feeling you’re best. Just like a car needs petrol, you need fuel.

Motivate

Have a coffee, play some music, go for a walk. Read an edgy blog. Think about your life goals. Do you want to create a globally-recognised illustration and win the acclaim of your superiors and peers? Do you want enough money to retire to a beach in Hawaii? Visualise what you want and remind yourself that you’re the only person who can stop yourself getting it.

Inspire

What was it about your job that drew you to it in the first place? Have you wanted this since you were a kid? Think about why you got into this to begin with. Whilst it’s important to grow, learn, and develop – we shouldn’t lose track of the things which lit our creative fires at the start. Call it going back to your roots, call it whatever you like. Don’t forget who you are.

Get help!

There’s no shame in delegating. There’s even less shame in asking for advice. Get in touch with someone whose words you value and ask for some guidance. They’ll see it as flattery and you’ll get some know-how knowledge.

Quit.

Go on, just give up. Pack it in. Leave. What’s the point in carrying on, it’s not what you want! If you hadn’t noticed, this is reverse psychology. Days off are great, but imagine life without your creative outlet? It may seem tough at times, but without, life would be a lot less sunny.
